Foremost, let us be clear about Skype display name and Skype user ID. They are two different things. You can change your display name but not your User ID. The User ID is the name with which you created your account with Skype. You cannot change that unless you delete the account and make a fresh one with the same email address.

Editing the Skype Display Name on Windows and Mac
To edit the display name, you need to first launch the skype and then sign in, to your account using your email or phone number and password. Next, click on your display name or profile image icon. Both are placed together at the left top corner of the screen. It will open a window on which you need to tap on the ‘Skype profile’ icon.
This would open a new window where you will find your name right at the center top of the page below your photo. There would be a pencil icon on the right of your name. Clicking on this icon will make your name editable. You would be able to delete your old name and type in a new display name. To finish, you can click on Enter/Return or simply click the checkmark on the right-hand side of the text bar.
Editing the Display Name on the Skype Website
To change the display name on the website; you first go to https://www.skype.com/ in website and then log in to your account. There you will find your name on the top right corner of the page. Click on it to open a drop-down menu. You need to click on the ‘My Account’ option which will take you to a new page. There would be a blue column on the left side of the page. Scroll down the column and click on ‘edit profile.’
Once you arrive at your profile page, there would again be a button on the upper-right side, ‘Edit Profile.’ Click on it. It will take you to a fresh page. There would be two rows there, of First Name and Last Name respectively. You can put any display name that you fancy. Finally click on the green-colored ‘Save’ tab at the bottom of the page to save all the changes. Reopen the Skype to see the new display name.
